Lead Designer

Cailler is the oldest chocolate brand in the world, and the only Swiss brand to utilize sweet condensed milk in its chocolate. Given its history and connection to the Swiss Alps, I felt the packaging should be reminiscent of Swiss culture. The idea for the diecut packagaing takes inspiration from Swiss papercut, Scherenschnitt (“Scissor Cutting”) is a traditional folk art dating from the 1500s in Switzerland. Symmetry, an important design element in Swiss design, is achieved by folding the paper in half. Traditionally Swiss papercuts capture a theme, landscapes, or traditions, but I decided to capture the aesthetic geometrical patterns of traditional Swiss folk clothing patterns while drawing inspiration from symmetry in Art Deco that emulate each chocolate flavor. For inspiration on the line work, I looked to Swiss architecture, particularly of the Bauhaus movement. I made the packaging entirely in German, since most people in Switzerland speak German. From left to right, the flavors are Almond Milk Chocolate, Alpine Milk Chocolate, Hazelnut Milk Chocolate, and Dark Chocolate.
