The Bell Jar is a book that details the life of Esther Greenwood, who dreams to be a poet. Upon going to New York City for a month-long summer internship as a guest editor of Ladies' Day magazine, Esther's internal conflicts come to a head as she struggles with issues of identity and societal norms, particularly regarding views of femininity. My concept focuses on the symbolic metaphor of the bell jar, as Esther describes her situation and time at the psychiatric ward as being in a bell jar, the container for a specimen, herself, of her depression. By the end of the book, Esther believes the bell jar, her depression, and suicidal thoughts, will never go away, always looming; this connects to how mental health is always an ongoing struggle. Thus in my illustration, the bell jar is looming, and the viewer does not know if it is lifting or enclosing her.
